Powerway’s powerful calibration solution in action at Nuneaton based aerospace components manufacturer

Gardner Aerospace’s innovative “Total Manufacturing Service” allows a customer to source a substantial proportion of its machining and fabrication requirements with a single source in the knowledge that Gardner has the skills to deliver on time and at a substantially reduced cost. Customers include Rolls Royce, Smiths, Goodrich and many others. Some years ago, Gardner invested in Powerway Suite 2000 quality management software for a variety of applications, including calibration for the 2,000 or so gauges in use at the Nuneaton factory. At that time, they were using a DOS based version of Gauge Master and as Powerway’s Gauge Manager came ready-integrated into the rest of the suite for Document Control, Auditing, Corrective Action and APQP, the decision was made to go with Powerway. John Bettany, Quality/Calibration Technician, recalls “We looked at a variety of systems at the time, but we chose Powerway as it looked as though it had all the functions we were looking for and looked to be easy to use”. Powerway’s integration engineers migrated the 2,000 existing gauges from Gauge Master into Powerway Gauge Manager with the minimum of disruption and Gardner were up and running with the new system in no time.

Today the system is at the heart of the quality function with John and another colleague in near constant contact with the software. “We use it every day for tracking gauges, checking them in and out for use and of course for calibration” says John. It seems that the software has been a big success, not just internally on a day to day basis but has also proved an invaluable source of data at audit time and has helped Gardner sail through the relevant parts of their AS9100 audits, a view echoed by Quality Assurance Manager, Andy Worrall. “Our auditor has had various requests for gauge related data and Gauge Manager has always been able to provide him with whatever has been required quickly and easily”. All in all, the team at Gardner Aerospace rate Gauge Manager a big success, as John confirms “We have been very pleased with the software over the years, I think it has proved a valuable tool and looking back I’d say that it has done the job very well.
